HUNTER BOATWORKS / STANDARDS DESK

BUILD
TO A
STANDARD.

A working map for the rules, standards, manufacturer instructions and competency requirements behind HUNTER Boatworks. Know which authority governs the job before a wrench, grinder or crimper touches the boat.

01 / REGULATORY BASELINE

START WITH
THE VESSEL.

Requirements change with vessel size, intended use, fuel, propulsion, passenger/commercial status and the scope of alteration. HUNTER’s first gate is classification of the vessel and job—not a favourite rulebook.

CANADA / PRIMARY

Transport Canada

For applicable Canadian small vessels, start with the Small Vessel Regulations and Transport Canada construction guidance, including TP 1332 where it applies.

  • construction and compliance notices
  • intended operation and vessel category
  • commercial vs pleasure requirements
  • equipment and safety obligations

NORTH AMERICAN PRACTICE

ABYC

ABYC’s current standards library maps major systems: fuel, ventilation, electrical, batteries, steering, controls, exhaust, fire protection, plumbing and more.

  • 2026–27 Supplement 66 current publication
  • standards library access through ABYC
  • technician/advisor certification paths
  • repair and installation focus

INTERNATIONAL

ISO / TC 188

ISO small-craft standards cover specific system and component topics. The applicable edition must be checked rather than assumed from an old build date.

  • fire protection
  • ignition-protected electrical devices
  • electronic steering/shift/throttle
  • hybrid/electric propulsion

02 / SYSTEM ROUTING MATRIX

ONE JOB.
SEVERAL LAYERS.

The regulatory layer, installation standard and equipment manufacturer can all matter at the same time. HUNTER records all three before release.

Job / system
Working standards route
Additional control
Gasoline fuel + ventilation

Transport Canada applicable construction rules; ABYC H-2 / H-24 / H-25; ISO component requirements as applicable.

Tank, hose, fitting, engine and ventilation manufacturer instructions; ignition-protected hardware.

Diesel fuel + exhaust

ABYC H-33 / P-1 / P-4; applicable Transport Canada rules; relevant ISO diesel-engine/component standards.

Engine maker installation manual, exhaust backpressure, cooling and duty-rating requirements.

AC/DC electrical

ABYC E-10 / E-11 / E-13 plus related charging/inverter standards; applicable Canadian construction rules.

Equipment manuals, ignition protection, overcurrent protection, conductor ratings and battery maker instructions.

Hybrid / electric propulsion

ABYC E-30 and current ISO 16315 where applicable.

Propulsion OEM design, isolation, battery BMS, high-voltage procedures and trained personnel.

Steering + controls

ABYC P-17 / P-21 / P-28 as applicable; ISO 25197 for relevant electronic control systems.

Steering/control OEM geometry, pressure, hose, fastener and commissioning requirements.

Fire protection

ABYC A-4 and current ISO 9094 where applicable; vessel-use-specific Canadian requirements.

Fire-system maker sizing, protected volume, shutdown/ventilation logic and commissioning.

Hull / structural refit

Applicable Canadian construction requirements plus recognized structural/laminate practice.

Naval architect/engineer where structural; material maker data; documented laminate schedule.

Stabilization

Applicable electrical/structural standards plus installation-specific requirements.

Seakeeper performance prediction, structural mounting, Ride compatibility and approved installer requirements.

03 / TECHNICIAN DEVELOPMENT

TRAIN FOR
THE SYSTEM.

HUNTER’s target is not “one marine certificate.” Different systems demand different competencies, OEM training and documentation.

ABYC

Marine Standards

Broad standards/compliance grounding across electrical, fuel, ventilation, fire, steering, plumbing and related systems.

ABYC

Marine Electrical

AC/DC systems, batteries, charging, inverters, corrosion and electrical safety.

ABYC

Engines & Fuel

Gasoline/diesel fuel systems, exhaust, controls, drives, cooling and engine electrical.

OEM

Manufacturer Training

Mercury/Mercury Racing, MAN, Seakeeper and other systems require their own product-specific training and authorization paths.

04 / HUNTER RELEASE GATES

NO SAFETY-CRITICAL
“GOOD ENOUGH.”

Internal decision gates, not a claim that a single checklist makes a vessel compliant. The responsible qualified person for each system still signs off the work.

01 / CLASSIFYVessel and use identified

Pleasure, commercial, fishing, passenger or other status; dimensions, tonnage and intended operating conditions recorded.

02 / SOURCECurrent requirements identified

Applicable Canadian rule/standard plus ABYC/ISO working references and current OEM installation documentation.

03 / ENGINEERStructural or system design resolved

Measurements, load paths, material schedule, diagrams and required professional engineering completed before irreversible work.

04 / BUILDQualified installation

Correct materials, tools, torque, surface preparation, routing, protection and trained personnel documented.

05 / TESTCommissioning evidence

Pressure/leak/electrical/functional tests and OEM commissioning steps captured where applicable.

06 / RELEASERecords stay with the boat

Parts, serials, drawings, photos, settings, test results, manuals, certifications and unresolved exceptions remain in the vessel dossier.

05 / CURRENT SOURCE DOORS

READ THE
REAL SOURCE.

Starting points only. HUNTER checks the current edition and project applicability before work; old forum posts and copied diagrams are not standards.
