FISH THE COAST YOU ACTUALLY HAVE
October on Vancouver Island invites an easy mistake: planning a fishing trip using last season’s rules. Before leaving the ramp, check the official notice for the exact waters you intend to fish. A chartplotter waypoint or familiar headland is not permission to fish.
DFO notice FN1086, dated October 5, describes a finfish closure for October 8–31, 2026, in geographically bounded waters near Campbell River, including portions of Subareas 13-3 and 13-5. A limited Discovery Pier exception is specified; all other applicable species and gear rules still apply. This is not a blanket closure of Area 13.
01 / RULES DESK
Check the DFO notice coordinates against your chart, then check today’s DFO Area 13 and Area 14 tables. A detour can change the management subarea. Verify licence requirements, legal target species, quotas, conservation areas and permitted equipment.
02 / CONSERVATION
Non-retained rockfish can need help returning to depth. DFO provides descending-device guidance for rockfish caught from a vessel. Prepare the correct release equipment and learn its use before fishing.
03 / TACKLE WORKBENCH
Match terminal tackle to the current fishery. Clean and check reels, line, guides and connections after saltwater exposure. Product categories discussed here are not a claim of retailer stock or supplier endorsement.
04 / ELECTRONICS
Garmin announced LiveScope 2 in July and GT360UHD with Spy Pole in March 2026. These are manufacturer claims, not independent tests by THE WATERLINE. Maintain a proper lookout even with sophisticated sonar.
05 / SEAMANSHIP
Before departure check official marine weather, tides and currents, required safety gear, radio communications, batteries and a shore contact. Cold coastal water leaves little margin for errors.
THE COVER STORY / COORDINATES BEAT RUMOUR
The exact boundary matters. To plan a Campbell River outing, review each notice point in order and trace the closed polygon on an up-to-date chart, rather than drawing a rough circle around town. The current DFO management-area pages can add regulations that differ by species and fishing method. A pier exception is never a general permission to disregard the rest of the rulebook.
Keep a record of the notice number, its effective dates and the time you verified the current rule. If a trip crosses between Area 13 and Area 14, carry the applicable information for both. When conditions force a change of plans, revisit the legal plan as well as the navigational one. The discipline costs nothing, and it protects people and fish.
CONSERVATION REPORT / THE DESCENDING LINE
Rockfish can experience pressure injuries when rapidly brought to the surface. A fish that still moves does not necessarily swim back to its original depth. Descending devices are meant to return fish appropriately below the surface; correct attachment, deployment and release require preparation. The most responsible approach is to avoid prohibited encounters and keep suitable release equipment ready for lawful fishing where accidental captures may occur.
EDITORIAL NOTE / EQUIPMENT IS NOT A SPONSOR
Neither a sonar announcement nor a reference to common tackle should be read as an affiliated advertisement. The publisher has not independently performance-tested the named equipment and does not assert a purchasing relationship. When a product is examined in depth, THE WATERLINE will distinguish manufacturer specification, measured result, owner report and editorial judgment.
Regulatory review date: October 16, 2026. Always verify current DFO notices immediately before fishing.
