Exploratories, movement & making
Southgate rotates students through Exploratory Studies. Current offerings include Art, Foods, Woodworking and STEM for grades 6 and 7, with grade 8 options including Leadership, Beach Life, Fit & Rec, Drama and Game Studio. A year-long brass band program is also offered.
The school’s current motto is: Everyone Matters. Everyone Cares. Everyone Learns.
Southgate has also encouraged walking, biking, public transit and carpooling to school, and its Gator Den functions as a recognizable piece of student-school culture.
ROOTED fit: this is a natural middle-school launch point for bikes, outdoor recreation, beach/ocean learning, woodworking, STEM, photography, basic repair and community-provider sampler sessions.
Gator culture is already alive
Southgate opened as a secondary school in 1973 and became a middle school in 1997. The current school identity is not something ROOTED needs to manufacture: students and families are already addressed as Gators, there is a Gator Den, and school-branded Gator Wear has been sold directly through the school.
The useful design job is consistency. Confirm the current approved Gator art and preferred palette, then create complementary marks and clothing that feel like Southgate rather than replacing an identity students already recognize.
Because historical Gator Wear has appeared across many garment colours, garment availability should not be confused with an official school colour system.

Southgate’s current school language repeatedly uses Gator: Gator Families, Gator Den and school-branded Gator Wear. The identity is established. Apparel has been offered in many colours, so ROOTED should confirm the current preferred school palette and obtain approved logo files rather than infer official colours from one garment.
Schoolwear can build from what already works: a traditional Gators crest, original SOUTHGATE / GATORS graffiti lettering, and a new alligator character only if the school wants an additional mark. Existing Gator art stays protected unless the school supplies it for production.
