Programs, sport & belonging
Phoenix is a dual-track English / French Immersion middle school. Early and Late French Immersion students merge into one program in grade 7 after the grade 6 Late Immersion entry year.
Current school activity includes middle-school basketball across grades 6–8, and the school’s 2026 Firebirds Fun Run/Walk raised money for new sports equipment and a permanent GAGA ball pit.
The school mission centres belonging, hope and achievement, with diversity, cultural understanding and personal excellence explicitly named as part of the learning community.
ROOTED fit: middle-school sampling is the opportunity—low-barrier introductions to sport, outdoor skills, bikes, photography, water activity, technical making and transportation-supported experiences before students specialize.
The Firebird name actually means something here
The school first opened in 1950. After a 1976 fire destroyed the building, students spent two and a half years attending on shifts at Carihi while a replacement was built. The rebuilt school reopened in 1979 and was later renamed Phoenix to represent rebirth from the ashes.
The official school history identifies the Phoenix Firebird as the school symbol and credits artist and teacher Shannen Harle with painting it on the gym floor.
Phoenix also prominently displays First Nations student art and a pole carved by local artist Bill Henderson. Those works belong to the school/community story; they are context to respect, not a visual library for ROOTED merchandise.
ROOTED SCHOOL IDENTITY SUPPORT
FIREBIRDS — EXISTING SCHOOL IDENTITY
Phoenix is more than a convenient mascot name. The school was renamed after the original building was destroyed by fire in 1976 and rebuilt; the official school history identifies the Phoenix Firebird as the school symbol. Current school communications still use the Firebirds name. ROOTED should preserve that story and existing identity rather than invent a replacement.
A school-approved clothing system could use three distinct treatments around the existing Firebirds identity: a traditional collegiate crest, original PHOENIX graffiti lettering, and a new Firebird illustration only where the school authorizes the artwork. Existing gym-floor art and community-connected cultural works are not source material to copy.
Current school facts and identity evidence on this page come from official École Phoenix / SD72 sources and the Government of B.C. school registry. Firebirds is verified. Exact production colours, logo files and commercial-use permissions are not assumed.
Phoenix is a middle school built around discovery, growth and belonging, with English and French Immersion tracks and a long-standing Firebird identity. This page should feel younger, louder and more exploratory without losing the ROOTED field-manual backbone.
01 // IDENTITY
THE FIREBIRD IS ALREADY THERE
The school itself uses the Phoenix Firebird as a symbol of school spirit. ROOTED can riff on heat, motion, feathers, smoke and rebirth in clearly unofficial student-facing art without borrowing from unrelated cultural motifs.
02 // AGE
DISCOVERY BEFORE SPECIALIZATION
Grades 6–8 are a perfect stage for trying branches rather than choosing a career. Make the page encourage low-stakes sampling: paddling, biking, photography, repair, climbing, first aid, art, media and outdoor skills.
03 // LANGUAGE
FRENCH IMMERSION IS PART OF THE SCHOOL
The page should acknowledge the dual-track culture naturally. Keep calls to action and key labels easy to adapt bilingually instead of treating French Immersion like a footnote.
04 // ROOTED READ
MAKE IT MOVE
Phoenix should get more mascot motion, more tiny easter eggs and more visual energy than a senior-secondary page. The useful stuff still wins: safety, access, transport, equipment and qualified local instruction.
ROOTED angle: discovery + Firebird energy + bilingual school culture = a page that should feel impossible to confuse with any other middle school.
