Cortes Island School describes itself as ecologically minded and place-based, with multi-age learning and a growing relationship with Klahoose First Nation. It hosts Cortes Island Academy, a Grade 10–12 program that uses the island, local knowledge-holders, scientists and artists as campus and curriculum.
For Fall 2026, the Academy’s Underground Media semester combines Life Sciences, English/Media, politics, studio arts, Outdoor Education and Leadership; current school activities also include beach-based learning and water-safety experiences.
This school is already doing the kind of place-based, outdoor and creative education ROOTED wants to support. Any branding or imagery involving Indigenous knowledge, language or symbols must remain community-led; ROOTED’s strongest contribution is shared access infrastructure and practical pathways.
ROOTED SCHOOL IDENTITY SUPPORT
Cortes Island School explicitly centers place-based learning, reconciliation and relationships with Klahoose First Nation. ROOTED will not invent culturally specific symbols, mascots or visual language. Any identity work involving Indigenous knowledge or imagery stays school- and community-led.
ROOTED can support approved outdoor, science, media, leadership and access materials while respecting existing school/community ownership and cultural permissions.
