Issue 001 — Build Something Worth Riding

A custom West Coast electric lowrider takes shape. Plus Shimano mechanical drivetrains, professional workshop tools and Vancouver Island cyclocross.

October 16, 2026

There has never been more technology available to a bicycle builder. Electronic shifting, compact electric drives, sophisticated suspension, precision workshop equipment and accessible CAD tools make ambitious projects possible. But technology isn't the point. The point is building a bicycle with personality that actually works.

RITTER’S BUILT follows the process: original designs, tools worth using, new products worth understanding, and the communities that keep the culture alive. We will always distinguish a design concept from a built, tested product.

THE BUILD: WEST COAST LOW-LOW, ELECTRIFIED

Our first major design series follows a purpose-built electric lowrider trike. Think stretched bicycle frame, very low stance, slender tubing, long raked front end, broad rear track and wide Malibu-style swept bars. The riding position comes from classic beach cruisers; the visual discipline comes from West Coast lowrider bicycle culture. This isn't a cargo trike dressed up in chrome.

Our paint studies run through candy red, Blue Raspberry, Grape Freeze, citrus yellow, pearls, creams and metallic flakes. A great finish needs to make the frame lines visible, not disguise them with bodywork.

The challenge is mechanical: safe steering geometry, verified frame loads, useful ground clearance, brake performance, battery weight distribution, controller protection and a serviceable electric drivetrain. A show-bike stance cannot excuse poor stability or braking. We're progressing through CAD studies, component packaging and prototype planning rather than inventing production specifications.

Next build checkpoints: establish wheelbase and track-width ranges, compare rake/trail packages, specify frame materials and joining techniques, design independent braking and motor cut-off provisions, and set up physical test criteria. We’ll show design revisions and parts costs as they become defensible.

THE NEXT WAVE: MECHANICAL SHIFTING STILL MATTERS

Wireless drivetrains get the headlines, but Shimano's DEORE XT mechanical program is a reminder that well-engineered cables remain relevant. The RD-M8200 is a mechanical HYPERGLIDE+ 12-speed rear derailleur offered in short- and long-cage variants. Shimano describes its SHADOW ES architecture as low-profile and built to shrug off some trail impacts, with pulley covers that help keep debris away.

Electronic shifting offers consistency and additional controls. Mechanical shifting remains attractive for riders who value direct feel, familiar adjustment and straightforward service. The smart build choice considers cassette and chain compatibility, intended use, access to spares and the rider's priorities rather than treating newness as a substitute for fit.

THE WORKBENCH: LIFT IT RIGHT, TRUE IT RIGHT

Heavy electric bicycles change the working conditions in a service shop. Park Tool's PRS-30 Mechanical Lift Repair Stand uses a manually operated lift, reducing the need to hoist a heavy bicycle to working height. That makes lifting method and technician ergonomics part of the tooling decision—not an afterthought.

Park Tool's TS-4.3 Professional Wheel Truing Stand supports wheels up to 32 inches, hub widths from 75 to 250 mm, rims up to 127 mm wide, and tires up to 152 mm wide, according to the manufacturer's published specifications. It accommodates thru-axle, quick-release and solid-axle configurations. That is the sort of coverage a shop working on mountain bikes, cruisers, BMX and unusual builds can use.

Our workshop reporting will evaluate capacity, repairability, repeatability, footprint and Canadian delivered cost. Manufacturer claims will be labelled; first-hand tool reviews will only follow actual testing.

THE SCENE: TWENTY SEASONS OF CROSS ON THE ROCK

Cross on the Rock, Vancouver Island's grassroots cyclocross series, is celebrating its 20th season in 2026. Its published upcoming race dates are October 25 at the Alberni Moto Cross centre in Port Alberni (Funhouse X), November 8 at Jordie Lunn Bike Park in Langford (Blue Bridge Cross), and November 15 at Beban Park in Nanaimo (Hot Crossed Bunnies).

These events remind us that bike culture runs on riders, mechanics, trails and volunteers—not only product releases. Cyclocross rewards simple equipment that works in messy conditions: sound tires, disciplined maintenance, reliable shifting and the rider's skill.

ON THE RADAR: CRANKWORX 2027

Crankworx's published 2027 World Tour calendar lists Christchurch for February 18–21 and Rotorua for March 10–14. Beyond podiums, we’ll watch for the technology around the racing: new wheels, suspension decisions, interesting prototypes, service techniques and filming innovations. Dates and venues will be rechecked against organizer notices before publication.

THE PRICE BOARD: WHAT THE CANADIAN SHELF ACTUALLY SAYS

Canadian retail reference, checked for the October 16 issue: Trail Bicycles in Courtenay lists the Shimano DEORE XT RD-M8200 mechanical rear derailleur at CA$153.99; its page warns that live availability and in-store pricing can differ. Quick Cranks lists the Park Tool TS-4.3 professional truing stand at CA$889.99. These are independent retailer advertised price references, not RITTER’S stock, wholesale prices, sale offers or confirmed delivered costs. Taxes, freight and availability may change.

Manufacturer specification check: Park Tool rates the PRS-30 mechanical lift repair stand to 54 kg / 120 lb and documents a 74–132 cm primary clamp-height range. Its TS-4.3 accepts hub widths of 75–250 mm, a maximum rim width of 127 mm and a maximum tire width of 152 mm. Those figures guide workshop planning, not a claim that we have purchased or tested either stand.
