DELLA’S CAMERA JOURNAL

DELLA’S CAMERA JOURNAL 001 — Cameras Are Tools. Pictures Are Evidence.

October 2026: Sony, Hasselblad, Canon, DJI and Leica; essential film icons, used-camera inspection and a practical field assignment.

DELLA’S Cameras / Editorial Desk

October 17, 2026

THE OPENING FRAME / OCTOBER 2026. A camera can be a little white Alpha, a serious medium-format instrument, a well-worn 35 mm rangefinder, or a gimbal small enough for a jacket pocket. The best one is the one that makes the photograph you actually want to make. DELLA’S CAMERA JOURNAL starts with one promise: respect the icons, check the engineering, and never confuse a press release with a field test.

01 / THE 2026 CAMERA LANDSCAPE

Three different kinds of image-making tool now share the camera desk. Hybrid interchangeable-lens cameras handle stills and video in one system, often drawing on lenses their owners have spent years collecting. High-resolution medium format privileges colour, fine detail, careful working methods and printing. Pocket cinema trades a bag of lenses for low weight and stabilised movement. They are not competing to do precisely the same job.

SONY / THE FLEXIBLE E-MOUNT

Sony’s α7 V brings a 33-megapixel full-frame partially stacked Exmor RS sensor to the E-mount system. Sony states up to 30 fps blackout-free still bursts under specified conditions. It is interesting for hybrid assignments, but it cannot make an older Alpha camera and a good lens useless. Ask whether readout speed, autofocus, handling and media workflow solve a real problem before changing a camera body. These are manufacturer specifications, not a DELLA’S field test.

HASSELBLAD / THE MEDIUM-FORMAT MEASURE

Hasselblad’s X2D II 100C combines a 100-megapixel medium-format sensor, continuous autofocus and a high-dynamic-range colour workflow. The manufacturer also specifies 1 TB of internal SSD storage and 10-stop stabilisation at the image centre under its stated test conditions. For carefully made portraits, large prints and landscape work, the conversation goes well beyond the megapixel count. File management, lens range, handling and actual output are part of the cost of doing good work.

CANON / CHOOSE THE JOB, THEN THE BODY

Canon identifies the full-frame EOS R6 Mark III and video-focused APS-C EOS R50 V as distinct 2025 additions to its EOS R family. Their coexistence proves the point: there is no single universal 'creator camera'. Look at sensor format, lens availability, video and stills needs, and the things you already know how to use. Canon’s February 2026 market statement describes its broad RF and EF lens ecosystem, but current mount compatibility and regional offerings still need checking.

DJI / POCKET CINEMA, NOT A TOY

DJI announced the dual-camera Osmo Pocket 4P at Cannes in May 2026. The 4P adds wide and medium-tele perspectives to a three-axis-stabilised handheld concept, while the simpler Pocket 4 centres on a one-inch sensor. For a travelling magazine, workshop documentation or spontaneous walking interviews, an immediately usable stabilised pocket camera may be more productive than a larger rig. Camera modes, frame rates, advertised dynamic-range measurements, accessories and workflow limitations must be read in the product fine print before the assignment.

LEICA / HOW WE SEE THE FRAME

The Leica M EV1 introduces an electronic viewfinder to the M camera family. That invites a discussion about framing itself: traditional rangefinder viewing and EVF viewing encourage different habits, even when both use a small, quiet camera. A century of Leica history is valuable cultural context, not proof that every photographer needs a Leica. Judge the viewing and focusing experience in your own hands.

02 / THE ICONS ARE NOT DEAD

Film is still a real photographic medium. An Olympus OM, a Nikon F, a classic Canon SLR, a mechanical Leica M or a Hasselblad V-system offers more than fashionable patina: each has a distinctive engineering story, lens vocabulary and method of use. Older equipment also means light seals, shutter timing, exposure-meter accuracy, fungus, batteries, film transport, scanning and repair questions. A beautiful object can be a poor picture-making tool if those questions go unanswered.

DELLA’S long-term archive will connect film cameras, digital generations, lenses, photographic processes, darkrooms, photobooks, historic images, working photographers and specialist tools. This is a collecting and editorial ambition, not a claim that every icon is currently in stock or on display.

03 / SIX CHECKS FOR A USED CAMERA

  1. Confirm the exact model. Record full model, mount, variant and serial number where appropriate. Similar names may hide meaningful revision differences.
  2. Inspect optics. With gentle light look for haze, fungus, separation, scratched rear elements, stuck aperture blades and rough focusing.
  3. Check the image path. Digital: make and review actual frames, including even-tone exposures that show dust or sensor defects. Film: inspect pressure plate, take-up, light seals and transport.
  4. Test functions. Work across shutter speeds, focus ranges and apertures; check batteries, buttons, memory slots and ports without forcing damaged parts.
  5. Ask for provenance. Service documents and traceable acquisition beat confident sales talk. Confirm independent repair and parts options for valuable legacy cameras.
  6. Budget the whole system. Batteries, chargers, media, scanning, film, adapters, filters, replacement seals and useful lenses count as part of the camera.

This is a buyer’s screening guide, not a guarantee or professional inspection certificate.

04 / A SHOOTING ASSIGNMENT

Choose a familiar object with texture: a ceramic vessel, an engine part, a hand tool, an interesting stone. Make four views. First: window light and a phone. Second: standard focal length on a digital body. Third: deliberate close focus. Fourth: one lamp with controlled shadows. Make a physical print, even a modest one, and note light direction, focal length, exposure, camera position and intention. Which frame communicates what you saw? Equipment comparisons become useful once there are photographs to compare.

05 / THE DELLA’S CAMERA DESK

Our research lanes: Hasselblad, Canon, Olympus, Sony, Nikon, Leica and DJI; film and digital bodies; classic and current lenses; useful lighting, stabilisation and image-processing tools. These are editorial and commercial targets, not confirmed authorized dealer relationships.

Our future reading room: historical and contemporary camera icons, darkroom techniques, photographers, shows, workshops, photo walks, used equipment and better ways to learn. Activities are concepts, not announced bookings or guaranteed services.

Current retail status: DELLA’S Cameras is an informational and enquiry presence within the shared ROOTED/HUNTER website. No camera checkout, stock allocation, dealer pricing, image-usage rights, supplier-direct fulfillment or trade-in service has been verified as operational. Enquiries should be handled individually until real agreements, prices and transactions are tested.

THE LAST FRAME

A useful camera lets you discover something you would otherwise have missed. Learning the machines is worthwhile. Making the picture is the point.

Editorial transparency: Specifications above are drawn from official maker publications researched for this October 2026 issue. They are not independent reviews, paid placements, authorisations, quotations or warranties. Models, features and availability may differ by market and firmware.
